Kačírová, Andrea ; Irmanová, Eva (advisor) ; Kocian, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis discusses the process of democratization in Slovakia in the years 19891998 and tries to answer the question whether this process was successful. The thesis analyzes various factors that have influenced the course of democratic consolidation. The work is based on the theoretical concept of democratic consolidation of the authors Samuel P. Huntington, Juan J. Linz and Stepan C. Alfred. This thesis focuses on the single territory in a certain period of time, therefore the main method used is the case study. In addition to the case study, a comparative method and various statistical data are used. For a better understanding of the issue, consolidation within Czechoslovakia and Slovakia is compared, as well as individual electoral programs and their subsequent application and compliance in practice. The analysis of democratic consolidation in Slovakia is conducted on the basis of a study of selected literature, media archives and relevant internet resources. The thesis is divided into 5 main chapters. The first chapter deals with the theoretical basis of democratization and the concepts of individual authors. The second chapter evaluates Slovakia and the democratic transition itself, namely the Velvet Revolution, the emergence of political parties and movements, free elections and...

Bátová, Martina ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
This bachelor thesis concerns the Slovak political system under the Vladimír Mečiar's government and its influence on the foreign policy. The aim of this thesis is Mečiar's authoritarianism and to analyse if there was an impact on the inner policy as well as foreign policy. It analyses the period from the beginning of the second Mečiar's era as the prime minister in 1992 to 1998 when his third government ended. The thesis is conducted in the form of a case study. In the thesis I specifically elaborate the theory of democratic consolidation written by José Juan Linz and Alfred Stepan which focuses on the democratic consolidation of political arena; then I elaborate the Fareed Zakaria's concept of illiberal democracy and additionally I study the Guillermo O'Donnell's concept of representative democracy. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to prove the democratic deconsolidation in political arena in Slovakia and to verify the validity of the theory of defective democracy on the case of Slovakia and also to describe the Slovak political isolationism which has been in my opinion too little analysed. In the first part of the thesis I present the three theories mentioned above and their individual components. In the following empirical part these individual components are applied to specific examples...

Comparison of Democratic Consolidation in Former Eastern Bloc
Bárta, Vít ; Houda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Vaňous, Jaroslav (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to numerically evaluate democratic consolidation in Eastern European countries of the former Eastern Bloc. To compare these countries with each other and decide which of these countries can be considered as consolidated democracies. Secondary aim is to find which factors supported this consolidation or at least correlate with it. Theoretical basis of this work is Wolfgang Merkel's theory of democratic consolidation. He divides democratic consolidation into four levels: constitutional consolidation, representative consolidation, behavioral consolidation and democratic consolidation of the political culture. Each level of democratic consolidation is numerically expressed, with usage of Bertelsmann's transformation index data, separately for all states in two-year intervals since 2005 to 2015. Based on that, overall democratic consolidation is calculated. Therefore, we can compare countries between each other and in time. Correlation between factors supporting consolidation and overall democratic consolidation is expressed by Pearson correlation coefficient. This work is beneficial in creating and describing method, which can be used for numerical expression of democratic consolidation in any state since 2005 to 2015 without author's subjective influence. Another benefit is...
Civil Society and the State in Post-Soviet Russia
Votavová, Vladimíra ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee)
The bachelor thesis entitled The State and Civil Society in Post-Soviet Russia deals with importance, growth and function of civil society in Russia after 1991. At the beginning, the thesis strives to identify Russian regime type which is influenced not only by communist experience but also by the process of transition to democracy. Both the Yeltsin's and the Putin's administration are seen through the hybrid regimes theory that alleges that they are short of rule of law and limitation of powers. Those aspects essentially shape the form and players of Russian civil society that are characterized as well. The thesis is also concerned with different perception of the civil society concept in Russia and in the Western context; it describes particular dissimilarities and mentions differences of Russian culture and social discourse. In the end, the thesis is focused on president Putin's politics towards civil society, its incentives and consequences.
